Pixel 4a in India Will No Longer Receive Software Updates
If you own a Pixel 4a smartphone that doesn’t support 5G networks, it’s time to upgrade. Google has officially ended software support for the 4G variant of the Pixel 4a that was released in markets like India. The latest September 2023 patch did not come to the Pixel 4a, which means that Google has fulfilled its promise and the August 2023 update was the last that the Pixel 4a will receive.
Google had a strict software policy for its older Pixel models, but it was recently announced that the company’s Tensor-powered Pixel phones will receive up to 5 years of OS updates and six years of security updates. This puts the pixels always on par with Apple’s iPhone support and one more than Samsung’s.
The Pixel 4a was launched in markets like India where 4G networks are still common and people didn’t want to spend a lot on high-end Pixel flagship phones. The Pixel 4a didn’t help Google’s case to increase demand, but the surprise price cut allowed people to buy the Pixel 4a for under Rs 30,000, which did the company a favor and helped them clear Unsold inventory.
The 5G version of the Pixel 4a has already received the Android 14 beta, which is its last OS update, but still has a year of additional security updates.
The smartphone features a 5.81-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a single punch-hole camera opening at the top left corner and a 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio.
Launched in India, the Pixel 4a featured a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. It also has live subtitle support and an Always-On display that takes advantage of the low power consumption of OLED displays and provides an additional feature without draining the battery.
The Pixel 4a featured a single 12.2-megapixel rear camera with a wide-angle lens and OIS support. The Pixel 4a’s compact design made it popular among those who like small phones.
